Character information

Name: Miral Nerys
Age: 28
True age: 743
Sex: Female
Personality: Having lived a very long life, Miral Nerys has seen almost everything there is to see, and experienced almost everything there is to experience. She has traveled the continent of Ka’Lesa extensively, accumulating a wealth of knowledge over the years. Her experience also spreads to loss, however. As one of the few surviving Eldross, Miral was forced to live through the near-extinction of her race, including the loss of her wife and son, as well as the aftermath of the destruction of the forests of Harodiel, the Eldross’ former home. Having experienced all of this and more, Miral’s inner feelings are extremely complex and cloudy. However, she has somehow managed to maintain her outer emotional layer, letting no-one in unless she implicitly trusts them, something that is very rare indeed. Miral finds more solace with the animals she encounters in the wild, even more so with Inara, her lifelong feline companion.

In the wilds, Miral is quiet, curious and easy-going, with a careful demeanor due to the events of her life. She has developed a deep understanding of the wildlife of the continent. She coexists harmoniously with almost all creatures, interacting with the ones who welcome it, respecting the the ones who like to be left alone, and steering clear of the ones who are hostile. This understanding does not extend to the people of Asmir Ka’Lesa, however. When dealing with people, Miral retains the quietness and curiosity of the wilds, but the comfort and ease from dealing with wildlife is replaced with a involuntary nervousness, bordering on panic at times. While animals are easier to understand and react to, people are far more chaotic and complex beings.

When she has to deal with people, Miral has a lot of trouble reading intent behind words, often misinterpreting the point the person is trying to get across. Sarcasm and humour in particular are things she struggles with, often getting caught out by a sarcastic quip or joke, and made to look very foolish. Miral’s trademark conversational piece is a confused tilt of the head, something that occurs quite often. She is quite easy to read, as she does not have the social experience to be able to mask or hide her motives or feelings. Because of this, Miral usually tries to minimize the time spent talking with people, which can make her seem a little curt at times, though it occurs out of nervousness rather than intent. All of these factors result in Miral coming across as an honest, if slightly distant individual.

Miral’s social inadequacy is not the only factor that contributes to her general aversion towards populated areas. She is so intrinsically linked with the organic form of nature that she regards the cities and towns of the continent with a degree of apprehension, as the natural order has been bent to suit the functions needed by civilization. She appreciates the efficiency of such construction, but she fears what may happen if it is taken too far. After all, nature’s own designs also incorporate function into their creations, just in a far more subtle way. Miral does still marvel at the ways people have devised to accomplish tasks that they couldn’t physically do on their own, but she fears in equal measure what such things could do if abused. All of these factors result in a mild-mannered curiosity when in populated areas, but otherwise she tries to stay out in the wilds when necessary.

As mentioned above, Miral maintains a thick outer layer over her deeper emotions and memories. Though her immediate surface emotions are quite easy to read, with most people able to tell what she is feeling by her expression or tone of voice, she has another layer beneath that remains hidden to all but the most trusted. Along with her inexperience with people, it is possible that her focus on hiding her inner feelings and memories has weakened the protection over her surface feelings. On the rare occasions in her life that she has truly connected with somebody enough to let them in, they have found a deep and complex world within. One of the main parties to be privy to Miral’s inner workings is Inara, her animal companion. Inara and Miral have always shared an unusually strong bond, even amongst other Eldross, and the venerable ocelot has always been the rock that Miral relies on for emotional support.

Miral’s main companion within however is regret. She was unable to do anything to prevent the destruction of Harodiel and the near-extinction of her people, and though it’s highly likely nothing could’ve prevented the Dragon Onyxus from unleashing his path of destruction, what might have been is a weight that she has carried around with her ever since. Before the Onyxus event, Miral was a proud member of the Collective, an organisation of the wisest and most powerful Eldross in the land. Miral was one of the most promising Eldross, with her raw potential only matched by her determination to help the world. She put herself about often, taking on missions all over the place. She was energetic, optimistic and proud.

However, since the event Miral has undergone a transformation. She is no longer the young, optimistic up-and-comer of those days. The Miral of today is reclusive, quiet and reserved. The positive outlook of her younger years has been replaced with a cautiousness bordering on outright fear. Her confidence in her abilities has almost completely dissipated, and she avoids confrontation at all costs. She suffers from severe post-traumatic stress and a high-functioning anxiety has developed in her too, and they are a constant weight she carries on her travels. However, Miral has watched from the wilds as the world has changed, and she is starting to realize that a life in hiding is no longer an option if she is to protect what she loves. It will require much work, but Miral knows she has to re-learn to master herself and her feelings again, before she can begin to try and affect the world. Inara, her faithful ocelot companion, has also begun to become bolder and more assured in her step. Something is stirring within Miral Nerys, and the veteran Eldross is beginning to find the world once again. Inara has supported Miral through thick and thin, and is more than ready to face what may come by Miral’s side.
Likes:

  • The Wilds: Miral is the most comfortable out in the world. She prefers the openness of the wilds to the restrictions of the cities, frequenting forests and jungles whenever she can.
  • The Ocean: Miral’s love of the is is not restricted to land. Miral’s travels often take her to the shore, and she is just as comfortable swimming as she is climbing trees. She is fascinated by the wildlife in the water too, with Omaploths in particular being a target of her curiosity.
  • Hiking: In keeping with her other hobbies, Miral loves one thing the most besides her friend Inara, and that is travelling. Her favored mode of transport is walking, because it gives her time to take in all of the sights and sounds as she goes. Of course this also means that if she is needed anywhere that is not vitally urgent, she tends to take a while.

Dislikes:

  • Cities: Naturally, as an advocate of the open wilderness, Miral tends to avoid major cities and built-up areas. The dense architecture and overall closeness of everything give her claustrophobia, and the whole thing just seems unnatural.
  • Social Gatherings: Given how much time she spends in the wild, it is no surprise that Miral is not particularly comfortable in social situations. She is a clumsy but earnest conversationalist, and she can come across as a bit curt or blunt, but this is simply inexperience at the medium.
  • Fighting and Suffering: Miral has seen a lot of conflict in her day, and she harbors no love for it. Conflict breeds catastrophe, and Miral has experienced too much loss in her long life. She avoids fighting wherever possible, and helps any wounded party she comes across.

Fears:

  • Dragons: Given that a Dragon was responsible for the destruction of her homeland and the near extinction of her race, it is understandable that Miral should harbor a deep fear of the creatures. She is wary of Asentari, but she is not outright hostile towards them, and if one earns her trust, she will treat them no different to any other that she values.
  • Necromancy: As a great believer of the power and wonder of the cycle of life, Miral also appreciates the natural end of that cycle. To her, necromancy and any other method of cheating death is an affront to nature, and the type of tainted life that it produces is frightening indeed.
  • Technology: This is less of a fear and more of a wariness of sorts. Miral is so used to surviving using her knowledge of nature that she finds technology, such as spring-loaded launching devices and other wonders, very difficult to grasp, to the point that they create a deep unease within her.

Appearance

Height: 5’ 5”
Weight: 114 lbs
Appearance: Miral appears as a slightly-built creature, even amongst the relatively diminutive Eldross. She possesses the pointed ears of her kin, and her eyes are deep green pools that seem to swallow you up with their very gaze. She has long brown hair that she keeps tied back in an elegant braid behind her back. She is a very dainty being, possessing long limbs and fingers, but does not carry much weight other than that. Her nimbleness means she does not have many physical scars, though the emotional scars are far more numerous.
Miral Nerys Attune10
Clothing: Miral prefers simple and comfortable attire, and she makes all of her own garments. Her usual outfit consists of a tunic, armwraps that start mid-bicep and end in travel gloves, simple travel trousers with a thigh-length skirt over them, knee-high travel boots, and a travel cloak. All of these items are various shades of browns and greens, perfect for hiding in dense foliage.

Fighting style

General Fighting Tactics: Miral was an adept fighter in her youth, but since she went into hiding after the Onyxus event, her skills have atrophied severely. In fact, the only combat skills she still retains are her archery skills. She uses her bow as her primary form of attack, usually attacking from a vantage point or from cover. She doesn’t usually target vital areas, instead trying simply to harass her target into fleeing. It doesn’t always work, and Miral has been forced to shoot-to-kill in the past. She is not a durable fighter, and she is well aware of her inadequacy in melee combat, so she will avoid it if possible, using Inara to act as a sentry and alert her to anyone getting too close. Unless completely cut off, Inara’s timid disposition means she will most likely flee rather than fight.

When forced into combat, Miral’s rusty fighting instincts are still not enough to rely upon, and she tends to panic and make mistakes, rather than think rationally. She will use her powers recklessly to try and create separation from her opponent, before trying to flee. She has begun to remember her staff fighting skills, but she is a long way from being competent in the field. While she lacks the flat-track speed of her younger days, Miral is still incredibly agile and can usually get herself out of scrapes before things get too messy.

Combat Stats-

( All stats begin at average, and are raised and lowered as you see fit. Stats must be balanced however. You must decrease a stat to increase a stat. Raising one to good means you must lower one to fair. Read the Character Combat Stats Guide for more information)

Strength || Poor
Speed || Average(R-1 Good)
Agility || Very Good(R-1 Excellent)
Durability || Poor
Stamina || Average(R-1 Good)
Magical Power || Very Good(R-1 Excellent)

Strengths:

  • Archery Skill: Miral has forgotten much of actual combat, but she has kept this skill in good nick. Miral is a phenomenal archer, being able to hit a target consistently from 250 yards, with a small accuracy drop-off after that. This is due to the fact that the stealthy Eldross is usually much closer than this in the dense canopies of her chosen environment.
  • Attuned Senses: Due to Miral’s extensive adventures in the forest, she has developed her natural senses into formidable weapons of their own. Her smell, hearing and eyesight in particular are very sharp. They’re not quite at the level of her companion Inara, but definitely at the upper limit for humanoids.
  • Environmental Awareness: Given her aversion towards fighting and her general timidity, Miral has mastered the art of analyzing her surroundings to locate potential escape routes. While she no longer has the instincts required to turn this into an actual combat advantage, it does mean she is very difficult to corner without an opportunity to escape.

Weaknesses:

  • Poor Melee Combatant: Miral’s non-archery combat skills have deteriorated to the point that she is no longer the combatant she was in her early days. She has begun working on it, but there is extensive rust to shake off and she still gets bested by most melee fighters.
  • Cowardice: Miral has lost the confidence and assuredness from before the Onyxus Event, so she no longer has the will to fight in her. If things go too badly or if she is forced into melee combat, there is a high likelihood that she will break. Miral now suffers from heightened anxiety and severe post-traumatic stress, and so is more susceptible to fear effects, and can be driven to cower or flee quite easily.
  • Weak Tactical Mind: Miral’s tactical nous is limited to a single strategy: retreat. She has lost her military edge to the extent that she is currently unable to exploit weaknesses in an opponent’s armory. While she is quick to locate escape routes, it is the complete opposite when trying to locate opportunities to strike.

The heads of the arrows are made by a smith in Sindarin, an old friend of her father’s, and she carries spares in her backpack in order to make more as she needs. The quiver was made by her mother, and is also a beautiful piece of equipment. It is made of a thin layer of ash wood with a layer of boiled leather over that with silver vine details etched into it all over. Though Thornbow is a relatively small, though not as small as a shortbow, it still possesses a formidable range thanks to the quality of its construction, being able to hit a target 150 yards away without the draw weight increasing.

Miral Nerys Empty Re: Miral Nerys

Post by Orgoth Tue Apr 16, 2019 12:05 am

Background

History:
”Grow, my little sapling.”

In the year 259 of the Second Age, two Eldross hidden away deep in the lush, magical forest of Harodiel welcomed a baby girl into the world. Emmara Nerys and Kal Samiri were respected Eldross, with Emmara being a master healer and Kal making a name for himself as a resourceful and skilled ranger, and when they decided to settle down to have a child they intended to provide a fruitful and happy life for her. But as Miral Nerys discovered over the course of her life to the present day, life is far too capricious and unpredictable for that. She just had to make do. One thing Miral has learned to do very well is to make do. It wasn’t always this way of course. Like many other similar stories, things were promising to begin with, with a happy child being brought up safely by happy parents.

Miral was bonded at birth to a young ocelot named Inara that was born at the same time. They immediately grew very close, and from a young age Miral began to show flashes of her potential. She showed an aptitude for both her mother’s healing arts and the wilderness survival skills her father possessed, archery in particular. Kal would often take his daughter out into the forests to get familiar with all that nature had to offer, from the beautiful sights and sounds to the different animals they shared the forest with. Young Miral took to it all quickly, learning fast and soon becoming skilled in her own right. As she grew older, she split her time between working with her mother as a healer in Annis Galaris and performing tasks out in the field both with her father and on her own. She soon became a young but respected member of the Collective, organization that was responsible for almost all of the day-to-day maintenance of Eldross society.

Over the next half-century or so, Miral traveled the land a good bit, garnering a reputation as a kind and skilled ranger. She helped lost travelers to navigate the wilds, as well as occasionally lending her services to the Eldari in order to protect any wildlife in their lands that were designated as out-of-bounds to hunters. In her formative years, Miral was an idealistic and trusting person who had faith in the others around her. However, as she grew and began to deal with people more and more, she began to see flaws beneath the rosy picture she had created before. Though her parents were kind and genuine people, Miral discovered that there were many who had their own agendas and desires, and that these agendas were not always for the greater good. This didn’t apply to everyone outside of her family, as she had made a good few friends who were good people for the most part. Emmara always told her daughter to try and find the best in people, and that everyone had some good in them, but Miral would soon learn that this perhaps was not always true.

”Underneath the Learning Tree.” - Part 1: First Lessons

Miral’s first true encounter with the selfishness of people would come in the year 328 of the Second Age. An Assembly was called in the Collective to discuss a radical idea. Assemblies were quite rare, and generally only occurred over matters of critical importance. The entire senior contingent attended, including Emmara and Kal. Miral was not yet high enough in the ranks of the Collective to attend, but she was informed by her parents of what had transpired. A young and ambitious Eldross named Seralana had put forth a plan to move Annis Galaris from its current location in the western half of Harodiel, and position it in the center of the great forest. Her reasoning was that the great city-tree was being corrupted by the continuous presence of the Heart of Xartas underneath it.

The legend of the Dragon Xartas was well known amongst all Eldross. Xartas terrorised the early Eldross and Eldari in the First Age, so a plan was hatched by the Eternal Watch and the Collective to defeat him. Dragons were notoriously difficult to kill, and Xartas was a much more powerful one, so they decided to imprison him instead. An Eldari hero named Valoroph and an Eldross warrior named Carodin combined their power and trapped the Dragon in a dimensional prison, with the only remnant being the Heart of Xartas artifact. It was stored beneath Annis Galaris in order to stop it being tampered with. Both heroes perished in the effort, but Xartas was imprisoned. Seralana argued that the tree-city would be uninhabitable in a matter of years if it was not moved from the Heart’s corruptive presence. Seralana was a highly adept speaker, and she won great support with her words alone, and the fact that she was from a widely-respected noble family helped her cause also.

Emmara and Kal were two of the few that opposed this plan, citing the danger of Xartas if he should be freed, as well as the reliability of her prototype teleportation spell. The motion was passed however, and preparations were made. When the tree-city was teleported to its new home, Seralana was hailed as a heroine. But those celebrations turned to scrambled defence when a loud rumble was heard throughout the forest, Xartas burst forth, his prison compromised by Seralana’s teleportation spell. The following few weeks were filled with bloodshed. Xartas, fuelled with rage and hate for the mortals who would dare imprison him for so long, went on a rampage, attacking indiscriminately. He devastated the town of Andomir, a town in Endaron, before turning his attention to the Eldross again. He attacked with venom, with the Collective only able to delay him before he attacked again. Miral was an active part of these efforts, contributing attack power and healing when necessary. She had no time to think about her anger towards Seralana for her carelessness.

One thing that worked in the favor of the defenders is that Xartas’ stamina was a fraction of what it once was, due to his long imprisonment. He regularly retreated to the mountains to rest in between attacks. It was during one of these lulls that a meeting was requested by the Collective. The Eldari and Humans responded initially, and they sent as much aid as they could muster. It didn’t look to be enough, until the surprise arrival of an Orken contingent to the meeting place. Their leader, a shaman named Nash’Gok, offered the help of himself and his men to the cause, seeing that Xartas was a threat to everyone if left unchecked. Miral never got used to sight of the races working together like this. Soon after the Dragon had been defeated by a strike-team that was sent comprised of the best the four races had to offer. The legendary Eldari warrior Dalrodir Shor was sent to confirm the Dragon’s demise, and the races parted ways amicably. The Collective put out a search to find Seralana, to try her for her negligence. She was found in hiding on the southern border, and it was found that the release of Xartas was actually her plan all along.

Seralana believed the Eldross to have become weak, and the fact that they had to get help form the other races proved it. Miral could not believe it when her parents told her about it. How someone could be so callous and calculating, to the point that they were willing to cause death and destruction to prove a point. Her father had suffered injuries in one confrontation that it was going to take a long time to recover from, while Miral and her mother cared for him. Seralana was hauled off in chains and imprisoned in the same dimensional prison that had held Xartas, and the artifact was buried under the new Annis Galaris as a fitting punishment. This ordeal had shown Miral a side of people that was all to real, and all to dangerous. She lamented this, but it also served to strengthen her resolve to be a better person herself.

”Underneath the Learning Tree.” - Part 2: The Cycle of Change

The next century was one of maturation for Miral. The aftermath of the Xartas incident meant that a period of rebuilding was necessary in order to repair the damage caused by Seralana’s plot. Miral was learning responsibility to go with her talent, but that was not the only extent of her personal growth. As she traveled the land more while carrying out assignments for the Collective, she began to study the other peoples conducted their lives. The Eldari were a proud and somewhat aloof bunch, though they focused on the situation at hand when necessary. The Humans were an unpredictable bunch, to be sure. Their relatively short lifespans contributed to this, though they also just seemed to be inherently chaotic anyway. She didn’t get a chance to travel far enough east to encounter the Orken or the Heanta, though she had heard enough about them that she considered that to be a good thing.

The life of Asmir had an ebb and flow all of its own, though one constant always maintained during this, conflict. Word reached the Eldari and Eldross of the Breaking of the Mountain. The volcano that the Heanta called home deep in the frozen northern realm of Kyrias had become a battlefield for a clash between a colossal magma mauler named Karesh, and a Dragon called Rune, The fight threatened to devastate the city and the volcano, but eventually Ren the Hornless drove Rune away after Karesh had grievously wounded her, though it cost Karesh his life. Ren managed to protect the city by creating a powerful shield around it. This was only a prelude of what was to come though. The Humans were also going through a cycle, and they were approaching a desire for expansion.

In the year 421 of the Second Age, the Kingdom of Mondolin, who by now had fully recovered from the Xartas incident, had decided to launch an offensive, targeting the Orken lands. The new King, Edric Valeron, was an ambitious, militant, and relatively young. A poor combination. The Kingdom’s army marched into Orken lands, and initially were successful in working their way forward. However, once the Orkens rallied and the Black Legion arrived, the Humans’ momentum stalled. Their supplies dwindled, and then catastrophe struck when the Heanta joined on the Orken side. Kingdom forces were scattered, and the Orken-Heanta coalition marched into Mondolin and began to hit the Humans hard. The Kingdom’s forces retreated to Mith Silvanus, and what had started as an invasion of another territory quickly became a siege in their own capital. King Valeron was put to death for his recklessness, and a veteran commander named Casavir was elected King in his place.

Casavir was an exemplary tactician and an excellent leader. He formed the remnant of the Mondolin forces into a steel bulwark in Mith Silvanus, and they held the line against all odds. It was around the year 431 that the Eldari received a messenger from King Casavir. The man was a vassal of the King named Garrik Vasuarian The vassal delivered a handwritten message from the King himself and read it out in front of the Golden Council. The message was an impassioned plea for forgiveness, and help. The Council were reluctant to help at first, given that it was a problem brought upon the Humans by themselves. However, they were forced to concede that the conflict probably would have happened anyway, and that the Humans merely accelerated the process.

The Eldari agreed to render aid, and they sent a message to the Eldross for support. The Collective was split down the middle over whether to help or not. They had been slower to recover from Xartas and they were not eager to throw their lives away again, especially for a problem the Humans caused. Miral and her parents were part of the group that wanted to help, and so a small unit was sent to protect the Eldari rearguard as a compromise. The Eldari drove the Heanta-Orken forces back to the Mondolin border. In retaliation for their interference, the Heanta sent a force into Endaron, bypassing the front line. The destroyed the town of Goldorin before the Eldross rearguard combined with the Eldari reserve forces to rout them. Miral got her first look at a Heanta eating another person that day, and it was another memory that she would carry with her for some time.

The Eldross force continued with the Eldari forces who were ordered to pursue the Heanta, ending up in Blackspire Pass. Miral’s group was then part of one of the single bloodiest battles the world had seen. Eventually, the Heanta line crumbled just before the arrival of Dalrodir Shor and his unit. Miral had never seen a warrior of such skill before. Dalrodir seemed to simply glide through the battlefield as though he was born on it. He cut his way through a swathe of enemies to make it to the front line, and Miral was in awe. He seemed to have an aura that simultaneously commanded respect from his allies and fear in his foes. Miral, for her part, had fought ferociously, though in the back of her mind she lamented what she was doing. Her mother was a healer, and yet here she was extinguishing life. She had her orders of course, but she was nonetheless greatly relieved when Dalrodir gave the order to retreat, rather than pursue the enemy. An Eldari commander named Liliana Korvesa, who had led the original Eldari force before Dalrodir’s arrival, had objected to the retreat. Miral had seen the bloodlust in her eyes, and she would never forget it. It appeared the Eldari were not above the the flaws that the other races possessed.

”Underneath the Learning Tree.” - Part 3: Silver Linings

Once all forces had retreated, the Eldross had sent envoys to all parties involved, and negotiated a ceasefire. King Casavir thanked the Eldross and Eldari personally, and vowed that his people would learn from this disaster. The Kingdom of Mondolin closed its borders to everybody, and began to rebuild. Miral returned home with her unit, glad that the bloodshed had been stopped. A few years after this, a Human group calling themselves the Order of the Sun appeared and assumed control of an abandoned fort and the surrounding land to the south of Harodiel. The Order was led by a former Knight of Mondolin named Solden Kallis, and was devoted to cooperation between the races. They opposed the Kingdom’s policy of isolationism, believing that everyone would benefit from working together for peace.

The Eldross were the first to interact with the fledgling Order, and though they were wary of the unpredictability of Humans, the Order seemed to be a trustworthy and friendly presence in a world of uncertainty. Miral visited the Order in their home, now called Sunshield Hold, and was fascinated by the differences between these Humans and the former King of Mondolin who had started the recent war. Once initial wariness was eased, the Eldross began trading with the Order, and eventually the Eldari opened channels with them. What was most striking here was that the Order expressed no interest in buying military hardware beyond just basic equipment for their small force. Instead, a majority of the trade was in medical supplies and literature. The Order wanted to collect literary works from as many places as possible, making Sunshield Hold a center for learning, as well as peace. Miral would frequent the Hold often, learning as much as she could about the Kingdom of Mondolin.

”Underneath the Learning Tree.” - Part 5: The Cycle Continues

While Miral was changing both in knowledge and outlook, changes were happening elsewhere. In the year 447, the Collective received a report from the Eternal Watch describing a new race they had discovered. The Eldari had dubbed them “Undari”, given that they appeared to originate from beneath the sea. The Eldross shared this new knowledge with the Order of the Sun, who in turn shared it with the Kingdom of Mondolin. While the Kingdom was still closed off to the world, they still interacted with the Order, albeit in a limited capacity. Not much was known about the new race, as the initial encounter with an Eldari scouting party was relatively brief.

However, things would take a turn four years later. The Collective received a disturbing report of a conflict between the Orken race and the Undari. A plea for help was sent by the Orkens, but it fell on deaf ears as the Eldari still considered them enemies, the Eldross lacked the strength, and the Kingdom of Mondolin refused to even let the messenger enter in the first place. Scouts were sent to observe what was happening, and it appeared that the Heanta also got involved. The conflict was brief, and the Undari soon retreated to the sea, apparently having achieved whatever goal they had. The Heanta soon also retreated, so the order was given to investigate the Orken’s underground realm. Miral was part of the scout team that infiltrated cave system, and what they found still haunts Miral to this day. They Orkens were completely destroyed. All that remained were crumbling buildings and carcasses that had been nearly picked clean. Not one Orken survived. The scout team offered a prayer to the Gods, that they would forgive such savagery if they saw it, and headed home to report. The continent was in shock at the atrocities that had just been committed.

The alliance between the Heanta and the Undari was never going to last, however. The Undari disliked surface-dwellers, and the Heanta were treacherous by their very nature. The tensions escalated into a full-scale conflict in 534. Eldari and Eldross scouts kept an eye on the situation, but were forbidden to interfere. Miral was again a member of one of the scouting parties. The conflict lasted for seventeen years, during which time the fighting actually threatened to spill over into Mondolin. The Kingdom reinforced the border in response, and it was then that both sides saw the futility of their fight, coupled with the cost if they angered the Humans. They eventually signalled a truce, but even then their relationship was uneasy at best.

”Underneath the Learning Tree.” - Part 6: Something on the Wind

Several years later, word reached the Collective of a great and terrible beast attacking Heanta and Eldari lands. The beast was known as Kishin Dola, and it was a mighty foe indeed. Not only was the creature physically dominant, with size and power not seen since the Dragons, but it also brought with it a biological weapon of sorts. A fine dust spread from its wings when it moved, infecting people and wildlife alike. The infected beings began to behave erratically, eventually becoming violent. Miral was part of a unit that was sent north to try and help but the combination of the creature’s might and the infection it spread meant that their efforts were ineffective.

Eventually, a meeting had to be called between the Eldari and the Heanta, with the Eldross mediating. Their divided efforts were not enough to deter the Kishin Dola, so the two implacable enemies agreed on a non-aggression pact until the Kishin crisis was solved. They then diverted all of their forces to defense, while the two races’ best heroes, Dalrodir Shor and Ren the Hornless, were sent to fight the creature. They were both powerful enough to resist the effects of the Kishin Dola’s dust, while also being unmatched in martial prowess. Dalrodir eventually made it back, but he said Ren had perished in battle. Those infected by the Kishin Dola were freed from their affliction, and Dalrodir Shor added another achievement to his legacy.

”Time and Again” - Part 1: Escalation

A few more decades past, and tensions began to boil over across the continent. Miral was now a senior member of the Collective, and as such she was involved in many of the big issues the Eldross faced. In 657 of the Second Age, the border between the Eldari and Heanta was heating up to boiling point. The Heanta had somewhat allied with the Undari again, escalating tensions even further. Something was going to give, and while the Eldross would always support their kin, they wished to avoid conflict if at all possible. With that in mind, Miral was part of a diplomatic envoy that was sent to Sunshield Hold, with the objective of seeking the aid of the Order of the Sun to avert a conflict. The main diplomat in the party was a venerable Eldross named Numena Visari, a skilled negotiator and respected servant of the Collective.

After some talks, the Order agreed to use their neutrality to help call a meeting between all parties in Highspire Hold, a Human-built fort that lay near the Eldari-Heanta border. Visari spoke for the Eldross, while a powerful Magi named Merlin represented the Eldari. The Heanta sent Roth Vandel, while Kylian Fornos spoke on behalf of the Undari. Negotiations were long and tense, but the Highspire Treaty was eventually signed, establishing a buffer zone on the border and enforcing a ceasefire. The treaty was seen as a victory by some, but Miral and others who knew better soon realized that it only delayed the inevitable. She noted that even Numena Visari did not seem reassured by the treaty. Seven years later, and their fears came to pass.

”Time and Again” - Part 2: Conflict

In 657, the Heanta and Undari alliance broke the ceasefire, raiding an Eldari garrison near the border. The Eldari retaliated by destroying a Heanta watchpost, and the Second Great War began. Miral was put in charge of a unit of Eldross rangers and sent to the conflict zone to provide support for the main line. She commanded her unit well, managing to accomplish their objectives while suffering minimal losses. Their use of the forest that covered the buffer zone was the main reason for this. As the fight spilled into Mondolin territory, Miral conveyed her unease to the Collective about entering Human-lands. They were not a part of this war and they had remained silent throughout, continuing their isolation that had been in place since the conflict with the Orkens. The Collective shared that fear, but they had no choice but to support their Eldari brothers and sisters.

The death toll in this war was the largest in any single conflict the continent had seen. The fighting was frantic, brutal and devastating. The Order of the Sun lacked the numbers and strength to get involved militarily, but they made their mark in other ways. They provided humanitarian aid to victims of the war, as well as sheltering refugees displaced by the fighting. The war culminated in a cataclysmic final confrontation at Blackspire Pass, firmly in Mondolin territory. Miral had never witnessed bloodshed like what she saw that day. Both sides had suffered devastating losses, but the worst was yet to come. A third force from the south arrived, and they carried the banner of the Kingdom of Mondolin. The Human army was much changed from the last time they had been seen, with war machines the other sides had never seen before at their side, but most importantly, they were fresh. They dominated both sides and drove them from their lands, establishing a defensive wall on their border, but advancing no further than that.

Both the Eldross and the Order of the Sun realized that this would be their best chance to end the war before both sides destroyed each other. Another summit was called, this time with a Mondolin presence in the form of Knight-Commander Conrad Bennett. The Second Highspire Treaty was signed, and everybody returned to their homelands to lament another colossal loss of life. The Eldross and the Order of the Sun increased their humanitarian presence throughout the area, help victims of the war. The Eldross also helped the Eldari rebuild their structures in Endaron, which had mostly been devastated. Miral would enter a new stage of her life here, as events would change her view on life.

”In Full Bloom”

They say you find love in the strangest places, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that love was found on the battlefield. During the war, Miral found most of her unit’s missions involved either providing support for an Eldari unit in the forest, or moving with another Eldross unit to a new position. The other unit in question was led by a respected warrior named Kira Toril. Skilled from an early age, Kira was one of the youngest Eldross ever to be recruited by the Collective, such was her precocious talent. She was a very powerful fighter and capable leader, and she had garnered great respect over her years of service.

By this stage, Miral had been in a few relationships over the years, but her career kept getting in the way. Fortunately, none of them had ended badly, so Miral was still optimistic in that department. Miral had been with both females and males, but she always felt more comfortable in the relationships with women. Towards the end of the war, Miral’s duties veered more towards accompanying Kira’s unit, and the amount of time spent together ignited a spark along the way. The two grew closer together over time, as Miral was fairly open while Kira was fully gay. She had experimented with males in her youth, but she soon accepted her preference for females once she reached adulthood.

The tipping point happened one night while the two units were camped out in Endaron, having collected supplies to deliver to the frontlines. The two were inseparable, and they ended up in Miral’s tent, talking and laughing the night away. A night of passion followed, which bolstered their resolve to make it through the war alive. They did just that, and a blossoming romance began. The two absolutely adored one another, with their differences complementing each other. Kira showed Miral how to be more confident and strong, while Miral showed Kira how to safely access the more sensitive side of her soul. They had been in a relationship for many years when they decided to take the next step.

”Putting Down Some Roots”

In the summer of 852 of the Second Age, after being together for more than a century, Miral and Kira decided to get married. The ceremony was attended by Miral’s parents, as Kira’s parents had died in the war, and it was a very happy affair for all concerned. The two were very happy together, but they began to feel like something was missing. Once Kira had located a lovely area to build their house in Harodiel, Miral began looking into something else. She had been wandering through Annis Galaris when she spotted a notice on the bulletin board looking for a home for a young boy whose parents had recently deceased. The mother had passed during childbirth, while the father had succumbed to illness recently. The boy, named Artem, had no living relatives, so was staying with one of his father’s nurses until he could find a home of his own.

Once the home was built, Kira and Miral brought Artem to live with them as their adopted son. Once the young boy acclimatized to them, he was perfectly comfortable in his new home. Kira and Miral could not have been happier with their family. The gave each other strength in the darker moments, such as when Miral’s mother passed away. Miral’s father would visit frequently after that, as the old home became a bit lonely. Artem, for his part, started growing into a well-mannered and respectful boy, and he took to his studies extremely well. His Companion, a raven named Quill, was just as mild-mannered, but initially had trouble with Kira’s Companion, a wolf named Barahir. Barahir kept chasing Quill around the forest until Inara had to put him in his place one day. Everything was going smoothly and Miral was the happiest she had ever been. It was not to be for long, however.

”Ashes to Ashes”

For the next fifty or so years, life was fairly good for Miral Nerys and her fledgling family. Kira Toril had become one of the most powerful warriors in the land, Artem had begun to excel as an alchemist and healer, while Miral was now on the Collective Council. The year 902 of the Second Age would prove to be one of major historical significance. The landscape would be forever changed by the events that would occur, and the repercussions would be felt to this day. For Miral Nerys, it would be the year she lost everything.

The Human-led city of Illion had profited greatly from its proximity to the Divinium mine in the southern mountains of Mondolin, with its location in the Free Lands allowing it to trade with many parties. When the Dragon Veralia arrived demanding tribute, they readily presented many riches and livestock to her. Veralia was pleased, but her satisfaction gave way to fear when n old foe appeared to confront her. Onyxus was one of the the most powerful Dragons to exist, second only to the Dragon King Xartas. Onyxus attacked Veralia, pinning her to the ground in a show of raw power. The people of Illion knew that if Veralia fell, they would have nothing standing between them and the fury of Onyxus. So they armed for war, and quickly confronted the Dragon. Archers peppered the Dragon from the walls while heavily-armored knights charged the beast. The effort was enough to free Veralia, but to the horror of the soldiers of Illion, the Dragon simply fled.

Onyxus turned his full wrath on the city, and though the Humans there were of stout heart, they could not stand up to the onslaught. Miral was studying maps in Annis Galaris when the tree-city received word that Kira’s unit were requesting reinforcements, and that they were engaging a Dragon. Miral was about to set out with her own unit when the remnants of Kira’s legion arrived in the capital. The engagement had gone badly, leaving Kira with no choice but to engage Onyxus alone, buying time for her troops to escape. The world seemed to collapse around Miral as the weight of this news began to sink in. She wanted to strike back immediately, but she was ordered not to by the Collective, as they were waiting for reinforcements. She instead moved to the border and kept an eye on the region, and track Onyxus’ movements. It took all of her resolve to not march out to meet the Dragon, but she could not let Kira die in vain, and she also had Artem to think about.

Support came in from everywhere, with the Eldari sending a unit led by Dalrodir Shor, along with troops from Mondolin. The most surprising thing though was a unit of Heanta showing up, led by Celeana of the Hornless Clan. They were treated with suspicion at first, but at Shor’s urging the Heanta were integrated into the task force. Soon though, Onyxus’ movements forced the task force’s hand. The Dragon had begun to raid villages nearby, and the concern was the Dragon getting bored and moving to a new area. So the troops left before they were at full strength, but Onyxus was ready for them this time.

The task force arrived soon, and they began the assault with efficiency and discipline. Miral led the Eldross archers, and worked in concert with a unit of Eldari Magi to provide suppression while the main vanguard - comprised of Eldari Warriors, Heanta Warrior caste and soldiers of Mondolin - moved against the Dragon directly. Artem was part of a class of Eldross called up to serve during this emergency, and he formed part of Miral’s legion. The young man had shared Miral’s desire to end the Dragon himself, but even at his relatively young age he understood the importance of remaining disciplined. Miral could not have been prouder, and she knew Kira would have been too.

The battle seemed to be turning in the allies’ favor, to the point where the Magi released a single devastating spell that smashed Onyxus out of the air with a massive bolt of lightning that shook the ground. However, though he was heavily damaged, Onyxus was not finished. He suddenly reared up and smashed the front lines to pieces with a slam, before unleashing a fire blast on the archers and Magi that obliterated them and sent the remains of the units into disarray. Miral, badly burned on her left side and bleeding profusely from a wound to her torso, scoured the chaos for her son. The task force was crumbling around her, but she didn’t care, for when she found Quill’s charred remains beside that of a burnt body, suddenly nothing mattered.

The noise around her was just that, noise. She looked up to see Onyxus taking off, heading directly for the Forest of Harodiel. Her home. She sank to the ground as the Dragon proceeded to destroy the home of her people. Her last thought before losing consciousness from her wounds was largely empty. She had lost everything in a matter of hours, her wife, her son, and her home. The only thing on her mind was what was cold, and darkness, and death. For Miral Nerys, the loss was so profound that it would become a permanent part of her very being. A weight to be carried, but a space never to be filled.

”Where do we go from here?”

Miral woke up some time later, hoping against logic that what she had endured had been some sort of nightmare. Of course, that was not the case, and she sat quietly in the medical tent, not being able to form coherent thoughts. The tent had other wounded who were being treated by Eldari healers, and Miral spotted other Eldross dotted around. Soon, the healers finished their ministrations and Miral suddenly realized that the tent was now populated solely by Eldross, and that a number of them were missing their Animal Companions. Inara sat quietly beside her master and friend, looking as tired and dejected as Miral felt. An Eldari entered, introducing herself as Mariel Shor. Miral noticed the resemblance to Dalrodir, but by this stage was tired of things. Mariel explained the situation to the gathered Eldross, who reacted in shock and dismay, with many weeping there and then.

Onyxus had finally been stopped, falling in combat to Dalrodir Shor. The battle had cost Shor his own life, which was a tragedy in itself, as Shor was a renowned and well-loved figure in both Eldari and Eldross lands. Mariel’s calm demeanor began to show cracks as she then explained that before her father slew the Dragon, Onyxus had completely destroyed Harodiel, and the Eldross now only numbered around a hundred or so. Mariel offered Eldari lands as a new home for the remaining Eldross, and left quickly, though Miral caught the sight of a tear rolling down Mariel’s cheek as she left. Miral sat on her makeshift bed for long moments. Once the medics began to dismantle the camp, the Eldross began to file out slowly. Most stayed to help the Eldari with their equipment and supplies, but Miral needed to leave. She needed to find out what to do next.

”Crossroads”

Miral and Inara traveled for a while, looking for purpose in a world that was now so unfamiliar to them. She contemplated suicide, but Inara would have none of it. Her ocelot companion was made of sterner stuff than most, and it was her that kept Miral going through these dark days. But even Inara could not help her master realize an answer to the questions that filled gaps in her soul that were opening up now. One thing she decided on was that she needed to try and get rid of some of the weight she now carried. Her faithful sword, Glyphos, had served her from when she was an apprentice. However, it had now become a constant reminder of her previous life, along with all of her failings and loss.

Travelling to Sindaron, Miral visited the workshop of Glorintir, a smith that was an old friend of her father’s. Glorintir had forged Glyphos for Miral, at the request of her father, along with the arrowheads she used for her bow. Glorintir welcomed Miral, but her visit was not one of reunion. She handed Glyphos to him, and told him to destroy it. He refused, however, and simply stored it in his shop, awaiting the day when Miral would have the courage to wield it again. He gifted her dozens of arrowheads, and she left. It would be decades before he saw her again.

”You must look outside, to truly see within.”

Miral’s new journey began soon after this. She had no real destination, but in the words of Glorintir as well as the urging of Inara, Miral knew she had to forge a new path, and endure. She traveled for years and years, becoming a hermit of sorts. She rarely traveled nea population centers, instead sticking to forests and the wilds. She helped other travelers that she encountered, using her knowledge of the wilderness and her healing skills to give aid. She earned a reputation in the ever-changing world as a benevolent watcher. On her travels, Miral discovered that there were just enough distractions to keep her mind from wandering into the past.

While she and the wilds cooperated well, Miral found that the people she used to be able to get along with, were a different matter. As her travels took her further east, she discovered that Humans especially were not particularly reliable in character. The Order of the Sun in the west were ideal, but the denizens of the Free Lands were a different matter. In addition to this, Miral found that she had developed particularly strong fears and anxiety. This meant that she now fled from confrontations, where she once would have took them on. She was jittery most of the time, but when she suspected hostility this turned into outright fright. This fear manifested significantly more when exposed to fire.

Miral could handle torches and small fires, but larger sources were still issues. She was captured one night by hunters while she slept in the tree canopy in a forest near Karem. The prospect of being at the mercy of strange men was harrowing enough, but things escalated when she was brought before a large campfire in the center of the hunters’ camp. She fell into a complete panic attack and struggled dramatically with flashbacks occurring intermittently. The hunters found the sight particularly amusing, at least until Inara broke loose and mauled two of them. Inara dragged Miral away into the underbrush in the confusion, before fleeing once her master had regained enough of her composure.

As Miral began to discover how her fears worked, her abilities began to change over time. She still retained her excellent archery and healing abilities, but she had all but forgotten her swordsmanship skills. Her powers adapted to her new way of doing things, as she taught herself stealth and evasion skills to help her avoid danger. Where she was once a formidable warrior, Miral was now an elusive and slippery scout, capable of escaping from most situations. Over the next few years Miral had a couple more scrapes with bandits and mercenaries, but each time she managed to avoid harm. Inara helped keep her safe too.

In recent years, Miral has noticed a subtle shift in the world around her. Tensions are slowly rising, and chaos is finding many places to rest. Notably, while there were always particularly powerful entities in existence, there definitely seemed to be increasing numbers of powerful people going around, particularly after the Human - Asentari conflict. By this stage, Miral didn’t fear the Dragon-kin as much as the original creatures, but she nonetheless treated them with even more wariness than normal, which says a lot. But the increasingly powerful people in the world have caused Miral and Inara to keep an ever closer watch on things from the shadows. She has seen the pattern before, and it ended in war. Miral is approaching another crossroads in her life, but she knew this decision point was coming for some time.
