Character Information

Name: Hashira Sanada
Age: Early Twenties
True Age: 200
Sex: Male
Personality: Hashira is very much like his father, Taisho. Though, he’s not as care-free as the Clan Head, mostly due to his position as Captain of the White Lotus, and he would rather not face the wrath of Mitsuru. He takes this position seriously, having held it since the inception of the Lotus as a whole. He is well liked in the White Lotus, and is easy to interact with. Hashira also takes the time to listen to his subordinates' problems, and tries to help with solutions. He believes it’s his duty as Captain to see, and hear his people, and provide them with someone who genuinely cares about their problems. Hashira also has a bit of a mischievous side to him, that likes to poke fun at people. One of those people is Asaka Tsuno. Instead of dueling her, as is the usual way Asaka deals with people, Hashira often just asks her to hang out. Which, for some reason, she seems to hate. Hashira is also on good terms with Kanetsugu Nakamura, as Hashira helped him to relax, and take the time to appreciate his free time.

Underneath his care-free attitude, Hashira is actually filled with self doubt, and terrified of failing the Lotus, and the Kijin race as a whole. Hashira also carries the weight of the Black Night on him, though he doesn’t believe he’s the only one who does. The events of that night haunt him, and he can still smell the blood of the children he massacred on the wind sometimes. He avoids the old Shino grounds like a plague, and Taisho, and to a lesser extent Asaka, know not to send Hashira there. Hashira isn’t stupid, he understands that what they did was the right thing. But, no one goes through something like that, and comes out unscathed.

Hashira is currently engaged to Mitsuru Arisato, a union brought on to keep the ties between the Sanada, and the Arisato strong. Though both Taisho, and Nuragi, Mitsuru’s father, believed the two would have been an item regardless. They grew up together, and the two share a very close, if strange, relationship.

Hashira has also become interested in, and has practiced, smithing. The process is a very intricate, and involved one, and Hashira particularly likes how much he has to focus on the task at hand, leaving every other thought by the wayside. If anything, it gives Hashira a peace of mind that he cannot get normally. Hashira also forged his own blades, and is very proud of how they turned out. He does not make blades for just anyone, as Hashira believes in the art of his craft. The only other person he has made a blade for is Mitsuru. Mostly because she wouldn’t stop bothering him about it.

Hashira, in battle, is incredibly excited about the prospect of fighting interesting people. He truly embodies this aspect of Kijin culture. Hashira was raised with a blade before even writing his name, so fighting is as intrinsic as breathing to him at this point. Hashira can also become cocky during a fight, though he usually only does this to get under an opponent's skin. Hashira also has no qualms about killing opponents, if they deserve it, or if ordered by the Lotus.

While generally likable, Hashira only truly trusts a select few people. As stated earlier, it’s easy to get along with Hashira. But, he does keep people at arms length. Taisho, Nobuyuki, and Mitsuru are among that group. Hashira is especially close to Mitsuru, as the two have been friends since they were children. The friendship eventually evolved into something more, which made it all the more easier for them when they were set up in an arranged marriage. Hashira is also very close with his father, Taisho. He also enjoys a good relationship with his brother, Nobuyuki. While Nobuyuki isn’t anywhere near the fighter Hashira is, Hashira believes that Nobuyuki will one day lead the Clan just as well as Taisho does now.

Appearance

Height: 6 Feet
Weight: 156 Lbs
Appearance: Hashira is a young man, appearing to be in his early twenties. He has pale skin, and is considered handsome. His face has a softer look to it, with rounder cheeks. His eyes have bags under them, as if Hashira doesn't get enough sleep. In contrast, his eyes are sharp, colored amber, and full of energy. His hair is black, being lighter than his fathers. He styles his bang framing his face, with a large portion covering his right eye. He usually keeps it tied up, but his hair does reach past his shoulders, when it’s let down. Hashira also has a toned, athletic build. He is not overly muscular, but he does take care of his body, to keep it in fighting shape.
Hashira Sanada - The Black Wolf (WIP) Hashir14
Clothing: Hashira’s outfit consists of several layers. He wears a pair of black hakama, with a pair of wooden sandals, and black socks. He has a light orange kimono, which turns a more blue color near his legs. The blue also has gold waves going through it. He then has a dark red kimono over that, with designs of golden leaves all over it. He then has a black obi sash tied around his midsection, with a white wrap around his core. He then has a black, long sleeved  shirt, with the middle left open in an upside down V shape. The sleeves reach past his hands, and are connected to a ring on his middle finger. The shirt also has a number of crescent moons in gold around the chest, and on the upper arms. Hashira also is usually seen with a white scarf, with a gray design on it. He received it as a gift from Mitsuru. Hashira also wears a white haori, when not fighting. The inside of the haori is mostly blue, with a black wolf running through a field of white flowers. The back of the haori has the Sanada crest on it.

Fighting Style

General Fighting Tactics: Hashira’s fighting style is based on the Sanada family technique, but modified to fit him, and his abilities. The style heavily incorporates the use of drawing, and sheathing his blade quickly, more well known as iaijutsu. He is quick, agile, and hits hard, though this is offset by his terrible stamina, and durability. He is a well known swordsman, equally gifted with one, or two blades. Despite his attitude, Hashira is incredibly aware and smart during a fight, and tries to take no risks that would cost him the fight. He tends to lure opponents into a false sense of security, by appearing to not actually try during the start of a fight. He then can go into a few different places, depending on the opponent, such as a heavy strike, or he can launch into a barrage of attacks. He also does this rarely, but Hashira also will throw his blades at opponents.

Some enemies make the mistake of thinking that Hashira is useless without his blades. However, this is a weakness that Hashira has attempted to remedy fairly recently. While nowhere near a master, Hashira has been training himself in hand-to-hand combat, and he has actually begun to incorporate some of his martial arts into his swordsman fighting style. He has even begun fights unarmed, to test his prowess. Hashira also uses this to further fake out opponents on what he will do next, using his unarmed strikes to lead into a sudden slash with his blades.

When Hashira fights with his wolf, Sengoku, by his side, his style is altered slightly, due to the amount of familiarity the two have with each other. Hashira is a bit less aggressive, allowing more opportunities for Sengoku to leap into action. The two almost seem to be able to know what the other is thinking, and can follow up on attacks easily. Hashira is also under no illusions of Sengoku’s “death” during a battle, and “killing” the wolf won’t negatively affect Hashira, physically, or mentally.

While he isn’t exactly merciful in the middle of a fight, if Hashira see’s that an opponent is sufficiently taken care of, he won't kill them. However, if that opponent attacks after this mercy window, Hashira will not hesitate to end their life. Hashira does pull back a bit during practice fights, but not by much. He doesn’t actively attempt to kill his opponent, at the very least.

Combat Stats-

Strength || Good
Speed || Very Good
Agility || Average
Durability || Poor
Stamina || Fair
Magical Power || Average

Strengths:
1. Expert Swordsman: Since Hashira utilizes blades, he would obviously be very good at using them. While he generally prefers to use one, he is just as skilled wielding both at the same time. He is a practitioner of his own brand of the Sanada Sword style.
2. Tactically Astute: Hashira is a supremely experienced combatant. His years of practice have bestowed upon him an extremely quick mind when it comes to the art of combat. He is quick to spot openings and weaknesses in his opponent’s defenses, and he possesses a phenomenal sense of positioning and timing that only decades of combat can teach.
3. Hand-to-Hand: While not quite on the level of dedicated unarmed combatants, Hashira has still spent a considerable amount of time training this aspect of combat. As a result, he has added a variety of unarmed techniques to his repertoire, increasing his versatility with or without his weapons.

Weaknesses:
1. Ranged Weapons/Abilities: Hashira, while difficult to fight with in close quarters, is next to useless in a battle of range. He never trained with a bow, and a majority of his abilities are dependent on an enemy being at close range.
2. Single Weapon Focus: Hashira has dedicated his life to his sword style, neglecting to train with other weapon types in the process. As a result, while he is incredibly skilled with his chosen weapon, Hashira is less than stellar with other types of weapons.
3. Mental Trauma: Hashira is a supremely skilled and experienced warrior, but the psychological effects of the Black Night have left an indelible scar on his mind. He is no stranger to violence, but when the slaughter and loss of life reach a certain point, Hashira begins to lose focus on his task, the images of the Black Night distracting him and compromising his emotional stability.

Primary Weapon: Mugetsu (Moonless Sky)
Description: Mugetsu's blade is black with a distinct reddish purple hamon (hardening line), having the appearance of a saw or sharp teeth. and its tsuba (hand-guard) has flower-like edges. Though, nothing he makes appear is real. If Hashira makes a wall, and throws an opponent through it, it’ll do nothing. It can be kept up for a maximum of 6 posts, before he needs to dissipate it. Background

History: Hashira Sanada is the first son of Taisho, and Retsu Sanada. Despite being born to one of the most powerful Kijin in Yokuda, you wouldn’t be able to tell it by how Hashira was raised. He was frequently allowed to play with kids in his part of the city, and Taisho pushed for him to be put through the normal school system. His mother disagreed however, and took over the young child’s teachings herself. He took to his lessons quite fast, and he seemed to absorb knowledge at an insane rate. When he was old enough to do so, Taisho took it upon himself to teach Hashira to fight with a sword, and these were some of the most peaceful times Hashira had ever known. He also was taught how to behave himself, as the first son of the Clan. These lessons were also drilled into him by his mother, one of the few people whose wrath both Hashira, and Taisho didn’t want to arise.Though, if you asked him, Hashira never really expected to take over the Clan. Taisho seemed immortal to the young boy, so he never really took those lessons seriously.

When he was 13 years of age, Hashira met someone who would become extremely important to him, for the remainder of his life. Mitsuru Arisato. Taisho got along well with the head of the Arisato, Nuragi, and they both decided to have their kids continue the friendship. Hashira and Mitsuru became fast friends in their own right, with the usually level-headed Mitsuru acting as a bit of an anchor for the more excitable Hashira. Although it would take some time for either to realize it, their friendship had evolved into something more. It would take some time still until they talked these feelings out to each other.

Hashira, after enough time had passed, soon entered the Sanada dojo to sharpen his burgeoning talent for swordsmanship. Again, he was trained by his father, and this was when the enormous gap between the two truly became known to the young man. And, much to his chagrin, his lessons with his father stopped, as Retsu became pregnant with her second son. Taisho refused to leave his wife’s side during this time, much to her, and their servants' annoyance. Hashira, in the meantime, was told to help teach at the dojo until his sibling was born.

While he was helping train in the Sanada Dojo, an interesting new trainee showed up. This was Kanetsugu Nakamura. He was studying other swordstyles, and the Sanada were one of those that interested him. Hashira was the one who was in charge of that class, though not for too long. Once Hashira’s brother, Nobuyuki, was born, Taisho returned to the dojo, and took over the class Hashira was teaching. It was during this time where much of Hashira’s strength as a swordsman became known, eventually rivaling the rumors of Asaka Tsuno.

During a celebration for the anniversary of the Year of Gathering Clouds, a tournament was held in Yokuda and a call was put out to the younger generation of the Kijin: prove your worth and show your skill on a grand stage. Hashira entered, mostly at his father’s request.  He had heard that the first-born daughter of the Tsuno Clan, Asaka, was entering as well, which excited Hashira. He was eager to fight against someone with such a reputation behind her. Deliberately put in separate brackets, as the ones who organized the event also wanted to see the two clash, they climbed through the brackets, besting each opponent they faced before finally meeting at the finals. Both Kamatori and Taisho had a side bet going, to see which of their offspring would emerge victorious.

When Asaka and Hashira entered the ring, a hush fell over the audience. Hashira looked around scratching his chin, a playful smile on his face. He pointed at the crowd, addressing Asaka for the first time. “They seem to be more excited about this than we are, huh?” Asaka didn’t smile back but bowed to Hashira. “A lot will be decided today. But let us give them a good show.” She said in response, hand resting on the hilt of her sword, Mikazuki. His eyes flashed to the blade, but came back to Asaka. Not focusing on any point, instead keeping her body in complete view. This was to alert him of any movement on her part. Asaka watched him back just as keenly. In a flash both drew their swords, and just as the question on everyone’s minds was about to be answered, Kuroi Tsuno attacked the arena, interrupting the tournament. Almost in sync, Hashira and Asaka turned towards this new threat and began defending the civilians in the arena. It was a sight to behold as, between the two, no one got through. The other combatants along with Kamatori, Taisho and some of the other warriors in the stands joined the fray, and the Kuroi Tsuno were quick to retreat. But they had achieved their goal of stopping the tournament. Hashira wasn’t too worried about it, as he felt that he and Asaka would fight, at some point.

Some time after the tournament was over, Hashira had an abundance of free time on his hands, which was….irritating, to say the least. He had been helping with some attacks on the Kuroi Tsuno, at the request of Kamatori. Sitting in their much too large garden with Mitsuru, Hashira pondered whether he should get a hobby. “And what could possibly keep you entertained, Lord Sanada?” She asked, causing Hashira to frown. He hated being called that. But, she was right. There might not be a lot of things that could keep his attention. Picking his practice blade up, he looked at it, as if the sword would spring to life, and give him an answer. Then, in a spark of inspiration, it hit him. “I’ve got it!” He shouted, springing up to his feet, shocking Mitsuru. “I will learn the great craft of forging blades!” Mitsuru sighed, before nodding. He looked at her, before laughing a little bit. “I’ll forge you a weapon as well, my lady.”

Asking Taisho if he would set up a meeting, Hashira soon met one of the greatest smiths in Yokuda. An older Kijin by the name of Okada Muramasa. Agreeing to teach him how to forge blades, Hashira was taught around the same time as Okada’s son, Senji. They both took to the craft fast, but the older Kijin wouldn’t let them off the hook that easily. He demanded a perfection that was rarely seen, even in Kijin society. It was grueling work, but Hashira loved the ability to empty his mind, and completely focus on the task in front of him. It was years before Okada was satisfied with his work to allow him to practice it on his own. Hashira, with permission from his parents, took most of the garden out of their home, and replaced it with a forge. It was an exact replica of Okada’s, and with it, Hashira further honed the craft, eventually forging the two blades, Mugetsu, and Engetsu. He also forged a weapon for Mitsuru, (Name). Okada also rubbed off on Hashira, as he held his work to an incredible standard. As he held his smithing to this standard, receiving a blade from Hashira is the highest form of compliment, as he doesn’t forge blades often.

One day, while finalizing some of the materials he needed to have delivered to his forge, he was approached by an old face. Kanetsugu Nakamura. He had come to ask if Hashira would help him back up Asaka, as he felt that she was walking into a dangerous situation. Agreeing almost immediately, the two set out. On the approach, Kanetsugu motioned for Hashira to stop, and hold position. Nodding, Hashira waited, as Nakamura leaped up into the shadows above. However, from where he was, Hashira could hear everything. As things progressed, Hashira waited for a moment to make a move, and it came, when he heard several cracks, and he surged forward, seeing Kanetsugu and Asaka pass by him. He slashed quickly, feeling his blade hit flesh, and smiled, satisfied. He then turned, and thrust his sword forward, once again on target. The other Kuroi Tsuno held back, as two of their compatriots fell to the ground. Then, out of his shadow, Sengoku formed, and attacked, allowing Hashira to move out of the cavern.

A dark night descended on Yokuda, as people began to mysteriously disappear around the city. As the clans began to investigate these disappearances, a lone soldier stumbled upon a terrible sight: a corpse walking the street. The corpse attacked the soldier and, after a struggle, the soldier managed to defeat the corpse and bring the strange news to the clan leaders. After this incident more corpses showed up, bringing with them a wave of panic. Even more worrisome was the fact that the undead were just as powerful in death as they were in life.

The strange events were also met with the arrival of a stranger, a being known as an Eldari, a being who hailed from the surface. This Eldari, known as Merlin, was a Magi of his race, who had been drawn into Yokuda by dark magic. He met with Taisho first, and later Kamatori, since Taisho trusted the elder warrior and believed he had nothing to do with the undead. Merlin promised that he was peaceful, and offered help in discovering the source of the undead outbreak. Merlin used his magic to track the source of the dark magic, and discovered clear indicators that it was coming from the Shino sector of the city. Upon telling Taisho and Kamatori what was going on, they met with the other clan leaders in secret, and devised a plan to put a stop to the Shino, and make sure no one repeated what they were trying. Out of fear of what the Shino could do, they decided the only course of action was to completely eradicate them, leaving no survivors who could replicate the knowledge.

While initially the Sanada clan vowed to wipe out the threat, Kamatori knew that what was about to happen would mar the clan forever, and decided that his clan would shoulder the burden with the Sanada, lest the other clans decide to force the Sanada out later on. Brought in at the behest of their fathers, Asaka and the Sanada siblings were informed of the plan that was to take place. Given the option to back out if they wanted to, they all agreed to take part in what would later be known as the Black Night.

It took place in the dead of night, no time wasted as they didn’t want to give the Shino a chance to find out what was coming for them. Sanada and Tsuno forces dressed in black slipped into the Shino estates, and began a bloody slaughter. Not a man, woman or child was spared, out of fear that any survivors might have witnessed the dark experiments conducted by the Shino, and somehow pass on that knowledge. It was a terrible loss of life, but necessary to maintain their way of life.

After the Black Night, the formation of the Lotus changed things for Hashira. He wasn’t doing very good in the aftermath. He was aware of the damage the Black Night did to his psyche, but he kept this almost all to himself. The only one he could feel comfortable talking about this with was Mitsuru. When the Lotus was formed, Hashira was named one of the first Batch of Captains, and he was asked to create a group that fit his style. Forming the White Lotus, he made it the frontal assault force of the Lotus, filling it with warriors who fit this vision. He kept up his usual personality, but he also began to figure out the structure he wanted in the White Lotus. Part of this was becoming a captain who was easily approachable, and listened to his subordinates' problems. It was also during this time that he forged ahead with relationships with Asaka, who had made the Red Lotus, and Shinsuke, though Hashira more interacted with his son, Kanetsugu, within the Black Lotus. His relationship with Asaka was almost the complete opposite of the one he had with Kanetsugu, as Hashira enjoyed teasing the Tsuno, and rejecting her countless attempts to duel him. On the other hand, Hashira had a more easy-going relationship with Kanetsugu, which seemingly rubbed off on the man, if only a little bit.

Since then, the Lotus mostly moved against the Kuroi Tsuno, attempting to either push them out of the caves they inhabited, or wipe them out, depending on how merciful Taisho felt on the day. Hashira, for his part, continued to keep the White Lotus at tip-top fighting potential. It was also during this time that he and Mitsuru were informed of their engagement. Taisho, in his talk with Hashira, simply said that he was sick of waiting for Hashira to decide when to do it, so he and Nuragi had agreed to have the two wed. They didn’t have a problem with it, but their duties kept them from figuring out a date to actually have it done.

Excitement was soon to hit the Kijin again, as a message was sent to them from the only outside force that could make Taisho truly mobilize the Lotus. Merlin asked for aid. And Taisho was eager to give it. Meeting with the Captains, and Vice-Captains of each of the Lotus, Taisho explained what was happening. The surface world was facing their own Undead crisis. Merlin had asked for the Kijin to aid him in ridding their lands of the menace. Taisho had brought this to the other Noble Clans, who agreed to send the Lotus. They made for war, and an unknown surface world. Shortly before this, Mugetsu, and Engetsu were stolen from Hashira’s forge. Hashira, rather than throwing everything into disarray, quietly investigated on his own, but he could find almost no evidence of who would’ve done it.
