Asentari

Character information

Name: Octavia Velerius
Age: 22
True age: 25
Sex: Female
Personality: Octavia is a talented individual who has an exceptional gift for interacting with, taming, and training Wyverns and Drakes. Her skill with the creatures is on par with her disregard for military doctrine, and despite her record for ignoring orders she finds stupid, she has as of yet to be kicked from her place in the occuli Draconis as a member of the sky guard. Octavia’s occasional disobedience is only tolerated because of her unique skill when it comes to dealing with Wyverns. She is a very independent person and while she has some friends she's not prone to leaning on them for help. She is direct, speaking plainly when she has to.

Octavia has never liked rules. Perhaps it is in a wind Asentari’s nature to be free and push against restrictions, or maybe it's just her. While she knows she can get away with some insubordination she is always careful not to cross too many lines, and she certainly doesn’t use that as an excuse to cause trouble or commit crimes. Her Master, Julianus Hargen, is probably the only reason she hasn’t had her rank stripped. It might be because of this, or simply to keep her occupied that she has been assigned a teaching role in the academy, where she needs to be on her best behavior or risk being a bad influence.

Octavia is not what one would call a people person. While she doesn’t dislike people, she is awkward around them. She prefers to be left to her own devices and only engages in social situations when one hundred percent necessary. Her lack people skills and habit of ignoring people has earned her a bit of a reputation as a cold or ignorant person, but admittedly she'd not bothered with what people think of her. She does however enjoy a good sparring match, and putting her combat skills to the test, something she picked up from her master Hargen. Octavia isn’t one to sit by and allow cruelty, and while she doesn’t go looking to save people, she will never stand by and let someone in danger be hurt.

Octavia doesn’t have any particular likes or dislikes for the other races of asmir. She is unsure as to why many asentari feel threatened by humans, when they are part human. Her father was human. She’s never to this day met an Eldari, and though she knows heanta are responsible for her mother’s death she’s not inclined to hold them all responsible. She isn’t quick to hate but when she does come to hate someone she holds a grudge and it can be hard to get her to let it go.

Likes:

Wild beasts - Wyverns, Drakes and other large creatures are her preferred company. While she has exceptional skill when dealing with Wyverns and Drakes, Krag drakes not included since they don’t like anyone, she is not used to other large creatures and tends to keep a policy of look but don’t get seen, to avoid being eaten.
Reckless endangerment - She is a bit of a daredevil, a thrill seeker, launching herself into the air to cross between Islands instead of using a bridge, leaping from the back of airborne wyverns to fly temporarily, and in general putting herself a risk.
Being left alone - She doesn’t mind people, but she also prefers to be left be.

dislikes:
people touching her tail - not many Asentari have tails, maybe one in four, and while most asentari are aware that grabbing someone’s tail might be seen as impolite, kids and humans don’t always get the memo. Octavia hates people touching her tail, simple as.
general military bureaucracy - She has no time for sitting around listening to fools talk about things that don’t directly involve some sort of threat. Resource requisition and ration quotas are not important to her, and unless it concerns taming or training Wyverns, she’s not interested.
Animal cruelty - She likes all kinds of animals, and will not stand by and allow someone mistreat an animal, whether it be a kitten or a full grown Wyvern.

Fears:

Being locked up - She loves the freedom of flying and being outdoors and fears being kept from that.
Blackspire wyverns - Probably the only large animal she’s afraid of due to her history with the monstrous beasts.
Losing more loved ones - she’s lost both her parents, and she struggles to accept that if she gets close to people she might lose them too.

Appearance

Octavia Velerius Green_10

height: 5’10”
weight: 150lbs
Appearance: Tall and slender, with a 4ft long highly flexible serpentine tail covered in fine dark green dragon scales that extend up her back along her spine stopping below her nape. She has light brown skin and long platinum hair she keeps tied up in a pony tail that falls down her back. Besides her tail and back, her skin is smooth and scaleless. Her eyes are green with a hint of amber.
clothing: Octavia prefer’s light clothing as she is constantly active, but the one constant is her brown leather vambraces, gloves, and leather greaves. When taking a Wyvern out, she will often wear a long white coat with the outfit above, as it can be very cold in the air.

Fighting style

General Fighting Tactics: Octavia uses her speed and agility to move about the battlefield in an almost freeform manner, performing hit and run attacks with her Kama while using her powers to hinder opponents and slow them down to keep them away from her. She is particularly effective against large heavy opponents who would have trouble moving under the effects of her weight increasing abilities, and while she cannot hit particularly hard, she can strike with a storm of rapid attacks that can quickly overwhelm, especially as she has surprising range with her kama.

Between her Kama’s, her wind abilities and the ability to decrease her own weight, she can become temporarily airborne, unleashing her furious attacks from above. She is particularly at home on the back of a Wyvern or fighting on the sky islands where she can get around with ease. She is reckless, never thinking twice before leaping from a ledge or engaging in a fight.

Weapons

Primary Equipment
Name: Kamaxes
Type: Light Melee

Octavia Velerius Dedual10

Description: A pair of twin kama with a hooked blade designed to catch onto things, as well as deal nasty wounds. The blade is about one foot long, the handle around two foot long. The Blades can also fold in for easier storage, and both sides have an edge allowing the folded Kama to be used as short axes. The weapons are well balanced for throwing folded or unfolded. When the enchantment is activated The Kama are attached to part of Octavia’s vambrace by magical chains that reach up to twenty foot and are strong enough to support her weight. She can grab the chain to control the length of it, and uses them along with her feather ability to move through the environment around her.
Enchantments:

Name: Chain
Type: Support
Damage Category: N/A
Description: A thin magical chain connects the inner part of Octavia’s Vambraces to the butt of her Kama. The chain has a maximum reach of twenty foot. Name: Gust
Type: offense
Damage Category: very weak
Description: A powerful gust of wind that can be launched from her hands, it does little damage but can push foes away, or be used to propel herself in the opposite direction. Cooldown: 10 per post.

Base Form Customs

Name: Feather
Type: Support
Damage Category: N/A
Description: Shimmering yellow Energy surrounds Octavia and the effects of gravity on her body lessens to the point that she essentially becomes ¼ her weight without losing strength. This allows her to leap higher in the air and temporarily keep herself airborne with Gust bursts.
Cooldown: 1 post duration, 1 post cooldown.

Name: Heavy Ball
Type: Offense
Damage Category: Weak
Description: A blast of energy, it increases the effect of gravity on anything it hits to times two, essentially making someone or something two times heavier, causing them to have trouble moving and slowing them down. The effect lasts a single post, and does not stack with the effects of Gravity Well.
Cooldown: 2 post cooldown.

Name: Gravity Well
Type: Support
Damage Category: N/A
Description: An area of 30ft expands around Octavia, and gravity within that area is increased to x2 that of normal gravity for everything within the area barring Octavia and anything she’s touching, and magical attacks. Damage Category: N/A
Description: Octavia creates a gateway roughly 5ft wide by 7ft tall in a set location within 50ft of her. It can be vertical, or horizontal and completely up in the air if necessary. Background

History: Octavia Velerius was born to Precilla Velerius, second born daughter of Lord Astus Velerius, and Garrel, a human of Lower Edia. Her parent’s couldn’t have been more different, one a noble born Asentari Wyvern Rider, the other a simple farmer, they met when Precilla’s Wyvern was injured in a fight with a wild Wyvern and went crashing down in Garrel’s field. Garrel saved Precilla’s life, helped her get back to the town in lower Edia that allowed entrance into upper edia. Feeling indebted to him, she returned with a reward but he would never accept it, and she was too stubborn to stop trying, so she showed up with it once a week. Eventually, she was using it as an excuse just to see Garrel, and things developed into more than that. Eventually her father discovered her relationship and, when she refused to end it and seek a more acceptable partner, he disowned her. With nothing to hold them apart they soon married, and Octavia was eventually born.

The first few years of Octavia’s life was spent in lower edia, as her father would never be permitted to enter the sky Islands. While her mother still spent much of her time in the Sky Guard, she was more than happy to live with Garrel in lower Edia. From a young age, Octavia was obsessed with large beasts, especially Wyverns, and always badgered her mother for details about them. When she was old enough she insisted on being brought up to see the creatures in upper edia. Her young life was spent adventuring around her father’s farm, but as she grew bigger she grew bolder, exploring further from her home into the jungles, or exploring the sky islands when she went up there with her mother.

When Octavia was ten, her father passed away due to a disease, and her mother sold the farm and moved them back to the sky islands. Octavia began to spend more and more of her time around the Sky Guards Wyvern roosts, observing and interacting with the Wyverns. She loved being around the roosts so much that when she was old enough, she asked her mother to enroll her into the combat academy, where she began her training with the goal of joining the sky guard.

Octavia proved to be an exceptional evasive fighter from a young age, though she didn’t take well to the traditional training techniques deployed in the combat institutes and she was a terrible team player, often simply ignoring her teammates to go on the offensive. While her powers developed slowly, her first ability shown was weight manipulation which she used to stay out of peoples reach, usually flying over opponents to attack from behind and leaving her companions exposed. In a one on one fight she was almost impossible to pin down and often won bouts by exhausting or infuriating opponents before they could lay a finger on her.

Octavia didn’t make many friends, being quiet and withdrawn for the most part. She never minded being alone, mainly because after training she would always head to the skyguards Eyrie to help her mother with her Wyvern. However that did not stop her from gaining the attention of a boy by the name of Darius Merciallus. They met in her second year. A year older than her, Darius was noble born, an exceedingly talented fighter who had private training before joining the academy in the second year, completely skipping the first year, and a pompous asshole on top of it. When she didn’t instantly befriend him he became annoyed. To add insult to injury, she defeated him in a sparring bout despite his superior skills with weapons because she refused to stay put and eventually wearing him out, causing him to display what her mother called Merciallus rage. Octavia of course didn’t know much of the merciallus’ family history, but she was told that it hadn’t been pretty, and ended with the death of Darius’ grandfather and his aunt vanishing. Darius wasn’t one to be shown up or ignored, and after his defeat and outburst, he made it his mission to make Octavia’s life a nightmare. For the next few weeks he tormented her with his friends, and though they had trouble catching her they eventually managed to corner her.

The fight that followed was on his terms, and with nowhere to run to she was soundly beaten by him. He was prideful enough to keep his friends out of it, with the main goal being to prove a point. He was better than her. Octavia couldn’t understand, she’d done nothing to him, other than defeat him in a sparring match by wearing him out, but somehow she’d wounded his pride so deeply he hated her. After the fight, a combat instructor discovered them and they both got into trouble. Octavia being worse off was obviously the victim, but she insisted that he not be expelled. She didn’t want to make him more angry at her. Her hopes were that now he’d beaten her and proved himself, he would leave her alone.

That did not happen. Instead, his torments escalated over the next few months, and he wasn’t simply pleased to have won he was kicking her while she was down. It was mostly pranks, since he didn’t feel the need to beat her up anymore after winning the first time. And she stopped trying to fight back, and began to consider dropping out. However one afternoon, while avoiding him, Octavia ran into Julianus Hargen, second in command of the skyguard and friend of her mothers. Hargen was aware of her feud with Darius, but instead of bringing it up he complimented her exceptional behavior around Wyverns. He’d seen her in the Eyrie several times and had noted that she’d soothed some of the more anti social wyverns who generally snapped at anyone but their riders. Hargen was looking forward to having her, but he also gave her a piece of advice and an offer.

The advice was that she needed to understand that Darius was actually better than her. More skilled, better trained, even if she was able to keep out of his reach. That what she was doing when she fought was little more than running away, although she was good at it. She wasn’t an exceptional fighter. She couldn’t hold her own when she was cornered. And if she was going to be in the skyguard, the day might come when she would have to fight for her life.

The offer was that he would take on her training personally. Hargen had struggled when he was younger too. He was untalented, but what he lacked in natural talent he’d made up for with extra hours of training. So instead of dropping out, Octavia accepted his advice and his offer began to train properly. Hand to hand, with sword and shield, she learned to hold her ground and take a hit, she wasn’t the best, but she improved. Hargen pushed her hard, and he was a brutal trainer. She began using two weapons swords, then adopted light axes like Hargen, she trained her strikes and slowly she became stronger. She stopped relying solely on speed to wear out opponents, but attacked back with furious flurries of strikes that overwhelmed their defenses. He threw her against all sorts of training partners, fast strong, exceptionally talented or well trained. Her bouts took her into several one on ones with Rex Von Broven, the star child of the Primoris Rex. She lost more than won, took hits, but slowly her own defenses started to shor up.

Of course during the few months she trained, Darius’ torments continued, but when she was ready she challenged him to a formal duel. The fight that followed was heralded as one of the most formidable bouts in recent history, with both fighters showing exceptional skills. Darius was still stronger physically, but there was no more cat and mouse on her part. She faught, traded blows and still used her superior speed to her advantage, but there were moments when the battle could have gone either way. And in the end she didn’t beat him by wearing him out, she won by landing a clean blow to the head and knocked him senseless.

The fight put an end to Octavia’s torment, and she was for a short and very unwanted time a bit of a celebrity in the academy. However she was just happy to return to her peaceful life, albeit with an increased training routine. She developed an easy friendship with Rex, though being a few years ahead of him and with her own priorities set they didn’t become close friends. The next two years passed in a blur of training. In her last year, she sparred against an asentari from Lower edia by the name of Kronos, who’s talent had given her a run for her money but for the most part there was no clear winner. She was a bit wary of the younger student’s pranks, but he never directed anything towards her and her final year in the academy passed without incident.

After the academy, Octavia wasn’t accepted into the skyguard right away, but was put into the army to finish her training. Her one weakness throughout her time in the academy was her lack of discipline, shirking duties when she thought she had better things to do. Hargen had been lenient then, but he wanted her to understand that being a soldier ment listening to orders and doing what she was told, and learning to work in a team. So she did her stint, aggrieved with her master, but still doing it because it wouldn’t be long before she was where she wanted to be. She wasn’t the only one who ended up in the army either, Darius had also been placed there, and in her own squad no less.

This put Octavia in a strange situation, and she eventually chose to simply ignore Darius. He didn’t seem intent on bothering her, and left her be as well. They worked together when necessary through squad formations, training sessions whatever else was required. Several times she found him staring at her but he never spoke, and they left it that way. A few months passed, and their squad was picked for a routine scouting mission to the Vultani jungle. What was more, their captain was promoted, and Darius, having continued to improve rapidly during their last few years at the academy was given the command. Suddenly she found herself facing at least a month in the wilderness with a captain she hated and a squad that revered him for his strength, while she was simply tolerated because, despite having bested their captain she never seemed interested in anyone else.

To her surprise, he approached her and offered to transfer her to a different squad. Octavia interpreted this as a challenge and refused. She would not be looked down on by him, and chose to stick it out. Hargen would have probably planned this as a challenge for her. And so, their squad departed. They were sent out with a single Kelari that Octavia quickly became very fond of, and vice versa. She adored Wyverns and their stubborn natures but Kelari were so much more manageable and even tempered, and their smaller size made them better scouts and ground forces. Octavia happily took to taking care of the Kelari for the mission, since it gave her a purpose and made listening to Darius’ orders easier.

The journey through Lower Edia’s jungle to reach the edge of the fabled and deadly Vultani Jungle took them less than a week, but their destination was deep within the depths of the place often referred to as the green death, where an excavation crew had vanished. Vultani Basilisks, one of the most fearsome predators around, called the region home. There was a reason drakes and Wyverns steered clear of the place, and it was said that even dragons had avoided that side of the mountains because of the dangers the massive snakes posed to them. She definitely felt the difference in atmosphere, as if they had crossed an invisible border. Indeed, they had passed the borders of the enchantment that hid upper Edia behind illusionary mists.

Clearly the enchantments did more than keep the sky islands from sight, because no sooner had they passed it than they encountered a rarity. A Vultani Liger. The massive cat stalked towards them growling, but when it caught the sight of the Kelari it seemed to think twice and stalked away. They saw no signs of any other predators for the next few days as they tackled the jungle, but they kept a keen watch up. One night while on watch, her Kelari sitting with his head rested in her lap Darius approached her. She eyed her captain warily as he seemed to be thinking about something. The Kelari watched him to Octavia stroked its ears. “You two get on well.” He said somewhat awkwardly. “I didn’t realise you liked Kelari.” Octavia was baffled by his odd behavior, but she didn’t respond. He opened his mouth to say something, and thinking better of it walked away leaving her to continue her watch.

It was a strange encounter to say the least, but Octavia shrugged if off and didn’t make anything of it. The expedition continued deeper, and the squad identified the first signs of something terrible. A half eaten body, a member of the excavation crew. Octavia knew that if one was dead, they likely all were, and the mission seemed pointless however Darius ordered them to continue the search. They found nothing promising over the next days, until they made it the excavation site, an old ruin built by the gods only knew. Everyone, guards, expedition crew, and anyone else who happened to come along were dead. There were at least thirty bodies, many half eaten, strewn about the place and the site had been looted. This wasn’t the work of animals, but mostly likely something on two legs.

At first they assumed it was bandits, but the mystery was answered quickly when short thin humanoids suddenly burst from the treeline wielding crude stone spears and the looted weapons of the guards. Octavia wasn’t familiar with the creature, but Darius was quick to show off and tell everyone what he thought they were. Keavna, a small humanoid many associated with heanta because of their liking for flesh and murder, but as was documented they bore no resemblance or relation to the larger maneaters of the north.

Though small and malnourished, as the Keavna surrounded them they quickly realised were able to kill so many humans. There were alot of them. Their stone weapons weren’t much good against the group of asentari’s dragon skin, but there were so many that the group was forced to retreat as they hacked all around them. One of her squadmates was dragged down, and asentari skin did nothing as they tore at him and beat him to death.

With a burst of power that spread out around them, Octavia discovered a second power although she didn’t immediately understand the effects, only that Keavna that got to close suddenly struggled to stand, allowing Darius and the others to finish them off. With a few blasts of flame from Darius, the Keavna finally retreated and the group were able to make a faster retreat. The Keavna pursued, more climbing out of the woodwork, and as they retreated Octavia realized they were being herded. She shouted a warning but it was too late. Darius leading retreat, cutting anything that got in their way from their path met with a trap, and he was suddenly suspended in the air by his ankle.

Darius was dragged high up into the trees, out of sight. The encroaching Keavna were closing in on the group again, and the rest of the squad hesitated. With a sigh, knowing that she would regret it, she ordered the others to keep going and the Kelari too. Then she used her Feather ability and started to climb as fast as she could. The Keavna chose to give up chasing the others, having snagged some prey, and found an easier target, but as fast as they could climb she easily scaled the trees ahead of them. She hit them with another energy wave that caused many to lose grip and fall to their deaths, and kept climbing towards the sound of Darius, who was still dangling from the tree.

As she reached him, she saw a Keavna cut the rope, and Darius fell. Arilia reacted quickly, hitting him with her dragon breath, causing him to fly into the branches instead of plummeting, effectively saving his life. She leaped across to him and helped him gain his footing, and with a few more well placed blasts of air and fire they knocked the remaining Keavna from the trees. The pair fled the area, but their pursuit wasn’t far behind. The next few days were a blur as they made their way back to The Edia Jungle, exhausted but afraid to stop for fear of the keavna catching up.

Thankfully when they made it back to the edia border, the skyguard was waiting. Their squad had escaped days before and sent back a request for aid. A few days after making it home, Darius came by Octavia’s house to thank her for saving him. To her surprise, he followed it up with a genuine apology for his behavior when they were younger. He had tried to get the words out several times before, which explained his odd behavior. Octavia accepted the apology, and let the past go. She spent the next year in the Army under Darius’ command, and miraculously the pair grew closer, she would even call them friends.

On her nineteenth birthday Hargen allowed her to transfer to the Skyguard. Her mother gave Octavia her weapons, a pair of twin folding Kama. Masterfully designed she adapted to them quickly as they weren’t much different to the light axes she favored, but had had to shelve during her time in the army. Darius was happy to see her move to where she wanted to be. He’d been offered a place in nearly every branch of the oculi draconis but had refused all of them, choosing to remain a captain. The pair made time for each other outside of work, and to her surprise Octavia started to feel something for the captain. She’d never felt the faintest romantic notion before in her life and needless to say, it made her awkward. She found herself stumbling over words or staring at his face blankly. Darius never questioned her about it, but one day out of the blue he kissed her, catching her completely off guard.

They started dating properly after that, but their peaceful time together was short lived. It wasn’t long after she’d turned twenty, when a potential war came knocking on Edia’s door. It started off with a mass kidnapping, human slavers had found their way into lower edia and taken some villagers as slaves. The army sent scouts to track them down and bring the people back, but they managed to get out of edia Jungle and vanish. What happened next couldn’t have been more of a disaster, with the Asentari attacking multiple towns in search of the culprits.

Then the humans of mondolin, an independent and powerful nation of humans moved into the freelands to protect the people there from the Asentari. Their army marched forth from the jungle, Darius with it, and the skyguard sent to scout the skies and Octavia was plunged into her first war. She never saw the front line. Given a wyvern, she was sent with her mother to scout a town farther north east, where they suspected their people had been taken. They were on their way back, when black Wyverns she’d never seen the like of before rose from the mountains, horned riders atop them, and attacked.

The edia Wyverns were faster, but smaller, and though they were able to outmaneuver the larger black wyverns, they were outnumbered. They were driven upwards, when the fangs of one of the larger beasts sank into her Wyvern’s neck. Almost immediately, Octavia felt the red Wyvern begin to struggle and fail, and she started to undo her straps as the animal began to plummet. She was only thirty feet from the ground when her mother’s wyvern snatched her from the air and saved her from a fatal impact. However her mother’s wyvern was hit with a spray of shots to the wing from the horned riders, and the maneuver put severe stress on the wyvern’s wing. It barely managed to pull up and slow itself down before they impacted the ground.

Octavia was thrown from its grasp and hit the ground hard, breaking her arm and several ribs. Their attackers circled them, and began to land. She watched as the horned riders dismounted and began to close around them, drawing weapons. Then Octavia’s mother was on her feet, her sword drawn. She commanded Octavia to run, but Octavia refused, and forcing herself to her feet, she pulled out one of her Kama and took her combat stance. Without a word, one of the riders hefted a spear and launched it at them. Moving faster than either could comprehend, the spear ripped through her mother’s chest and she staggered back.

The other riders charged, and Octavia knew that there was no fighting them. She ran for her mother, but before she could reach her, Precilla burst into flames. Octavia was driven back as the fire consumed her mother's body expanding and taking the form of a dragon. It looked at her momentarily, then the fire dragon surged forwards scorching everything around it, and collided with the riders and their mounts. Flames engulfed everything ahead, like a true breath of fire from a dragon. The dragon of fire was gone as fast as it had appeared and left nothing but Ashes and charred bones. As the smoke rose, she saw the Spearthrower and his Wyvern vanish into the mountains.

Octavia’s Wyvern was dead, as was her mother’s leaving her wounded in the wilderness. After slinging her arm, she began a slow walk south west. She was near exhaustion when she finally found a road, and was stumbled upon by a squad of soldiers who declared themselves as Members of the order of the sun. The soldiers escorted her to their camp nearby, where she met Kairi Thorne. At first she was unwilling to talk, but it didn’t take long for Kairi to put two and two together and figure out Octavia was an Asentari. Kairi explained how the order of the sun had heard of the the situation between Edia and Mondolin, and had set out to track down and rescue the slaves. They sought to stop a major conflict before it went too far.

With little choice, Octavia told Kairi what had happened, and asked about the horned Riders. She was told that they were Heanta, and the Wyverns were from the northern mountains. As to why they attacked, she couldn’t say. After a few days of forced rest, Octavia was given an escort that brought her to Edaria, where she remained until the end of the war a few days later. She was surprised to find the Ruler of Edaria was an Asentari by the name of Aline, though she never actually met the woman. It was thanks to her, Kairi thorne and the order of the sun that the war ended at all.

When Octavia returned to Edia, a great deal of things were different. For one, her mother was gone, and those last hours with her would haunt Octavia for years to come. Darius was also changed. During the battle, he’d struck down a powerful human warrior in the heat of the moment. He agonised over his actions and a rift grew between them as they nursed their own grief. A few months later he left Edia, and when he finally returned after almost a year, everything was different. The thing they had shared was over.

Octavia returned to the skyguard where she was put back to work running scout missions. Any time she traveled north, she kept her eyes open for those black wyverns and the rider who had taken her mother, but she never saw any signs of them again. She longed for revenge. Hargen seen the need in her eyes, and to keep her mind off things and her out of trouble, he found her a job in the academy as a mounted combat tutor. She hated it, but it kept her out of trouble.
